Halkidiki residents make accusations of illegal logging
Tensions broke out on Saturday between MAT riot police and protesting Halkidiki residents during a rally against mining activities outside Skouries, northern Greece.
A group of residents gathered in Kalogeriko, near Skouries, protesting against the activities of mining company “Hellenic Gold”, which started road construction in the area on Saturday. Residents are accusing the company of illegally logging trees in forest areas.
A spokesperson for the company said that all activities are legal and that Hellenic Gold has nothing to hide, citing a recent ruling by the country’s highest administrative court which gave the company permission to proceed with its mining project.
Residents eventually agreed to leave, after being promised that next Monday they will meet with representatives of the company, the police and the forestry service.
