Greek activists highlight mining concerns in Montreal

By Brent Patterson, Council of Canadians

Vaggelis Lampakis (the mayor of Alexandroupoli in the Thrace region), Tolis Papageorgiou and Maria Kadoglou (activists from the Halkidiki peninsula) were in Montreal last night to raise public awareness about Vancouver-based Eldorado Gold and their plans to open water-destructive mines in Greece.

Montreal-based Council of Canadians activist Abdul Pirani reports, “The event went very well. We had an enthusiastic crowd of about 65 people, including NDP MPs Niki Ashton and Alexandre Boulerice, and Quebec Solidaire MNA Amir Khadir. There was a lot of feeling and emotion and it was felt that neither Eldorado nor the Greek government should get away with their actions.”

A special thank you to Alternatives for hosting the event in their building and to MiningWatch which has been helping to coordinate the national tour.
