El gobierno  griego ha dado un paso mas en su criminalización  del movimiento ciudadano de carácter medioambiental del Norte de Grecia, en la península de Calcídia ( Halkidiki) , donde los habitantes llevan una dura lucha contra la filial de la Multinacional Canadiense ElDorado Gold, que en un proceso irregular se hizo con  317.000 hectáreas de tierras para que transformara  un paraiso ecológico , un bosque ancestral , el bosque de la tierra natal de Aristóteles, en una explotación minera de superficie estableciendo una planta de ácido sulfúrico químico y  excavar en busca de oro, plata, cobre y otros metales usando un ecosistema de bosque antiguo para colocar sus estanques de residuos tóxicos, dañando de forma irreversible  el ecosistema de la zona, especialmente el agua. Una zona que vive de sus recursos naturales entre ellos el turismo.

Halkidiki, the birthplace of the ancient philosopher Aristotle, is a place of such great natural beauty that, every year, it is flooded by tourists from all over the world. In the western part of Halkidiki lies the primeval forest of Skouries. A few years ago the multinational gold mining company Eldorado Gold settled in Skouries and with the backing of powerful domestic private interests has begun large-scale mining activities. Thus, the irreversible destruction of the ecosystem of Skouries and the contamination of soil and groundwater with heavy metals throughout western Halkidiki has already started.

La empresa minera “Oro Griego” (Elinikós Jrisós) es una filial de la multinacional “El Dorado Gold”. Son las empresas que pretenden instalar una megaminería de oro en el noreste de la provincia de Calcídica, en el norte del territorio del Estado griego. Como se ha explicitado en entradas anteriores, el funcionamiento de una minería en la zona tendría unas consecuencias desastrosas para el medio ambiente y la vida humana.

The Macedonia-Thrace journalists’ union (ESIEMTH) expressed concern on Thursday about authorities eavesdropping on the media after court documents revealed that conversations between Tolis Papageorgiou, the founder of Hellenic Mining Watch, which opposes gold mining in Skouries, and a number of reporters were recorded.

Dear colleagues at Hellenic Mining Watch,

We’ve learned, with great concern, about the 29 residents of Halkidiki charged with “participating in a criminal organization”. The Greek state says that the purpose of this alleged criminal organization is that “through illegal means was aiming to prevent or postpone mining or other activity by Eldorado Gold in the area of Skouries”. However, according to news sources, no specific illegal actions have been linked with specific persons, nor has it been demonstrated that the anti-mining movement has ever used non-legal means.

European Court rules against Greece over gold mine land sale

ECJ’s ruling was described as a personal victory and vindication by Tolis Papageorgiou, who referred the sale to the European Commission in 2009 alleging it was a violation of competition law.
